This fascinating film was made after the shock death of the Sydney Dance Company's Artistic Director, Tanja Liedtke in 2008. Liedtke was killed in a road accident when she was just about to take on her new role at the dance company. Her predecessor, Graeme Murphy, had held the role since 1976. As a result Noel Staunton, Chief Executive of the company, engaged three internationally renowned choreographers to create one work each for 2008, starting off from a blank canvas. These guests choreographers were Aszure Barton, Meryl Tankard and Spaniard Rafael Bonachela, who went on to be named the company's Artistic Director at the end of 2008.
Blank Canvas charts the creation of We Unfold, Rafael's first critically acclaimed production in this role. Produced by Joanna Buggy and Tim Slade of Vast Productions, the creators of the acclaimed feature documentary 4, and featuring Italian composer Ezio Bosso's extraordinary score, this inspiring new film vividly and boldly celebrates the intense joy and pain of being a dancer and illustrates the amazing power and grace human bodies are capable of achieving. The film is narrated by Australian actress, Kerry Armstrong (Lantana, Oyster Farmer).
