: 60 mins

Tim Seirlis (Classification Trainer with the Attorney-General's Dept) gives a practical session, which examines the guidelines that are used to assess film content. The Guidelines for the Classification of Film and Computer Games will be discussed and then excerpts from a selection of films will be used to demonstrate how the guidelines are applied to content. This important insight will interest any filmmaker who has to deal with the minefield that is classification.

TIM SEIRLIS - BIOGRAPHY

Initially employed by the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) - as an Assessor of Films and Publications, the OFLC ceased to exit as a statutory body and its functions fell under the control by the Federal Attorney General's Department.

Seirlis was then offered a training officer's position, and has been performing that function ever since. He trains people in the film, television, mobile phone and games industries, as well law enforcement (police and customs) in regard to the principles of classification and the current Board Standards. He assists them to apply these principles to their environment and/or under the existing 'Industry Assessor Schemes'.

Prior to this Seirlis was a Police Officer with the NSW Police Force for 21 years, 17 of those as a Detective. He worked primarily in the specialist investigative areas, including Drug Law Enforcement, Homicide, Organised Crime, National Crime Authority and Counter-Terrorism.
