This warm-hearted comedy and multi-award winning film was a true labour of love for director Nadia Tass (who also co-produced and cast the film alongside her partner David Parker who wrote and shot the film). They mortgaged their house and forfeited their fees to get it made. The title character, Malcolm (based on Tass' real life, late brother and played by Colin Friels) works for the Melbourne tramway company until he builds himself a 'tram', which causes him to lose his job. With his mother dead and no income, he is forced to take a boarder, Frank (John Hargreaves). Frank is a petty criminal, and Malcolm turns his mechanical mind to helping him pursue his career. Malcolm creates a number of surreal inventions, including a getaway car, which splits into two independently powered halves. Critic John Hartley claimed that, "There was not a wasted or awkward moment in all of its 90 minutes." Come and see why Malcolm is much beloved by Aussie audiences.
