Audience members were led through a twisted web of intrigue, thrills and action set in the steaming intense heat of the Singapore landscape at last night’s In The Raw script reading of Metamorphosis at AFTRS last night.
The packed house was left on the edge of their seats with narrator Kate Box (The Black Balloon, Offspring, Rake) keeping up the tension leading the cast through the story. Ella Scott Lynch (Crowines, All Saints, Home & Away) as the main character Susan superbly drew audience members into the character’s metamorphosis journey through the act of revenge for her sister’s death. Katie Fitchett (Hating Alison Ashley, All Saints) who played Susan's murdered sister Macy also wonderfully captured the character of her best friend Al-Li complete with singing and multiple changes in hair colour.
Taking on the two main prisoner roles Toby Schmitz (Three Blind Mice, Griff The Invisible, Spirited) and Brendan Cowell (Beneath Hill 60, I Love You Too, Love My Way) brought strong showings of a manic psychopath and an unexpected sexual chemistry respectively to Quinn and Tom as they interacted through the story with Susan. The Buddhist detective Ma was played by Jonny Pasvolsky (Playschool, Macbeth, McLeod’s Daughters) with a skilled calmness brought to the
character in the morals of the policework involved with the crimes of the story.Rounding out our top cast were Tony Poli (Underbelly, Two Fists One Heart) and previous In The Raw cast member Peter Sumner (Blue Heelers, The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith) who took on the many other male roles in the cast. From husbands, to science partners, prisoners & security guards of all ages they created each characters persona impeccably adding some great accents along the way.
Our industry panel of Elissa Down (Wri/Dri Black Balloon) & Samantha Lang (Head of Directing AFTRS) were the first to provide comments and questions to writer Kris Wyld and producer David Elfick in the Q&A session.
Led by host Sandy George the Q&A session provided valuable feedback for the crew to take into the next steps towards production.
In The Raw is open for submissions of unproduced feature and television pilot scripts.
