DFF’s In the Raw returned to Sydney Theatre on the 1st of August for an unforgettable night filled with laughter, suspense and romance.
Tony Morphett’s madcap romantic comedy, directed by Megan Simpson Huberman, was brought to life in a hilarious and energetic performance by a top cast featuring Anne Looby, Georgina Haig, Ryan Johnson, Peter Sumner, James Mackay and Rachel Gordon.
The reading thrilled the audience with its mix of comedy, action, lovable characters and unforgettable moments. With crazy loud antics from the devious and senile Archie (Peter Summers), many passionate and humourous kisses between our prince Frankie (Ryan Johnson) and princess Amanda (Gergina Haig), the night provided non stop entertainment.
Anne Looby lead the cast as the Narrator and with the use of great comic timing, teased out the smoldering stares and long passionate kisses between Frankie and Amanda to the delight of the audience and cast. Also playing the naughty centurion, Millie, Looby left the room in stitches as she argued with her 1920’s rival Amanda.

Highlights included Rachel Gordon’s convincing accents reading for several roles, she transformed from upper class spoilt heiress to an overbearing Italian mother. Peter Sumner’s animated antics as different crazy old men, James Mackay’s awkward and insincere proposals as two different characters and the numerous moments of Ryan Johnson and Georgina Haig being drawn together in lustful comical styles.
The Q&A session following the read provided great feedback to writer Tony Morphett & director Megan Simpson Huberman with discussions on characters and plotlines. The audience members not only asked stimulating questions and gave huge positive feedback, but were also polled on plot points.
Thanks to an outstanding cast (sourced by Faith Martin Casting), a wonderful host, Laura Macdonald and a joyous script that reminded the room of the great Australian Romantic Comedy genre the night was a great success.
DFF’s In The Raw is open for submissions of unproduced feature and television pilot scripts.
